Raffaele Sargenti was born in Perugia. He took a diploma in composition, guitar and music teaching at the G. B. Martini Conservatory in Bologna. There he studied composition under Antonio Giacometti and Paolo Aralla and later went on to do advanced studies under Azio Corghi at the Regia Accademia Filarmonica in Bologna.

His musical production includes choir music, chamber music and music theatre in all its forms, with a special interest in works for and with children and young people, an activity that has earned him considerable renown.

In April 2009, with Lupus in fabula, he won the European music competition Opera Junior dedicated to the selection of a contemporary opera for children. Ever since its world premiere at the Teatro Sociale in Como in March 2010 the opera has enjoyed huge success in Italy: a grand total of 95 performances involving young audiences and schools in 21 cities.

In 2011 in Belgium Lupus in fabula (Ne criez pas au loup!) was performed at the Palais Opéra in Liège with the Orchestre de L'Opéra Royal de Wallonie under the direction of Carlos Chamorro and with stage direction by Caroline Leboutte.

In December 2011 the Spanish premiere of the opera took place at the Teatro Real in Madrid, while in February 2012 the opera was revived at the Opéra de Rouen Haute-Normandie under the direction of Oswald Sallaberger.
