Paolo Perezzani was born in Suzzara, in the province of Mantova, in 1955. He began studying music on his own, teaching himself to play the piano but above all reading and listening to the scores of the great classical and modern composers.
Subsequently he attended Armando Gentilucci’s courses at the A. Peri Istituto Musicale Pareggiato in Reggio Emilia and from 1979 on he continued his studies in composition under Salvatore Sciarrino.
In 1982 he took part in the concert series Opera Prima in Venice with Diario, for two flutes and piano.
In 1984 In quella vibrazione, for clarinet, viola and piano won the Composition Competition at the Festival delle Nazioni in Città di Castello. In 1986 he participated in International Musicweek in Amsterdam with his composition for flute l'Ombra dell'angelo. In 1992 he won the International Composition Competition in Vienna with Primavera dell'anima, for orchestra. In the same year this work was performed by the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester at the Festival Wien Modern under the direction of Claudio Abbado.
The radio music scene Donna di dolori, on a text by Patrizia Valduga and commissioned by RAI Radio Tre, was performed in preview form at the Acquario Romano in 1994 and then broadcast on radio the following year.
In 1997 at the Europa Festival in Ferentino (Frosinone) there was a performance of his first “musical scene in one act” Un beau jour, on texts by Samuel Beckett.
His compositions have been performed in various concert series and festivals of contemporary music including the Festival Ensemblia (Münchengladbach), the Nuova Musica concert series in Rome, Musikprotokoll (Graz), Aspekte (Salzburg), the Festival Spazio-Musica (Cagliari), Antidogma Musica (Turin), the Nuova Musica concert series in Macerata, the Wien Modern (Vienna), the Venice Biennale, the festival Milano Musica and in various cities in Italy, Germany, the U.S.A., Japan, Korea, Mexico and Australia.
Alongside his composition work, since 1980 Perezzani has dedicated himself intensively to teaching, founding and directing for many years the Scuola di Musica Comunale in Suzzara, teaching ensemble groups and holding numerous meetings, refresher courses and conferences on issues relating to basic music education and music appreciation.
From 1985 to 1988 he collaborated with Salvatore Sciarrino in the Composition Courses in the advanced music courses in Città di Castello.
He teaches composition at the Conservatory of Music in Mantova.
